Net foreign assets (NFA) determine whether a country is a creditor or debtor nation by measuring the difference in its external assets and liabilities. Sri Lanka defaulted on its external debt in April 2022 and services the domestic debts and other liabilities by printing money.

NFA refers to the value of overseas assets owned by a nation, minus the value of its domestic assets that are owned by foreigners. The situation has improved after it hit worst in April by end of 2022.
