It is learned that IMF Board-level approval for the facility of USD 2.9Bn would not possible within 2022. Sri Lanka must obtain official consent, especially from the main bilateral creditors namely China and India, which hold over 60% of the bilateral debts.

It is still unclear the stance of China on the debt restructuring in Sri Lanka as a large number of countries are in the pipeline to follow the debt restructuring. Therefore it might not be easy for China to treat Sri Lanka differently than others.
