IMF has confirmed that the government of Ghana has declared its intention to conduct a debt restructuring in 2023 prior to defaulting, unlike Sri Lanka. Ghana intends to secure USD 3 Bn over the next three years from IMF while moving for comprehensive debt restructuring.

Ghana’s total public debt as of October 2022 was USD 58 Bn up from USD 32.3 Bn in 2017. Debt to GDP as of now is 84% and expect to reach 107% by end of 2022. Sri Lanka’s public debt is estimated as USD 80Bn and debt to GDP is 145% as per MoF.
